The Eagle Eight Character Trait Program is back this school year! Each month a different character trait is emphasized in an all-school assembly and through teaching/guidance opportunities in the classroom. “Respect” is the trait for the month of September. Very simply, when we treat others the way we want them to treat us, we are showing respect.
What can families do to develop and reinforce respect?
Show respect to your children by listening. Make a point to set aside time each day to give your full attention to listening to your child.
Explain to your children that all people are created equal and that everyone is special in their own way.
Rather than criticizing people or using negative labels, try to find the best in others. Let your children hear you praising others.
Challenge your child to think of one person he/she has been disrespectful to in the past. Then, work to show respect to that person, reporting back on how his/her behavior changed toward that person.
When we begin teaching respect to children at an early age and follow through as they grow, they will be respectful as adults. After all, showing respect is one of the Keys to Success!
