On September 19 various members of the Altoona Midway FFA chapter traveled to Elk Valley to participate in an entomology contest. Members identified different insects and then took a written test.
The Southeast District has 24 teams A-team placed 9th overall and consisted of Senior Dillon Walker, Juniors Ivy Johnson, Tyce Marple, Brittney Reilly, Sophomore Seann Blair, and Freshman Dakota Carter. The B team consisting of sophomores and freshmen placed 6th overall. Members of B team were Sophomores Cadin Secrest, Elliott LaCrone, Lindsay Walker, Ryan Simpson, Dean Phillips, and Christian Lee, Freshmen Brittney Kinzle, Carrie Coble, Khila DeJardin, Danielle Dixon, and Jordyn Graham.
Entomology, meaning the study of insects, is one of many contests that our chapter will attend. Members first identified various insects including the stink bug, crickets, and beetles. They then took a 50 question test on the anatomy of insects, pesticides, and if they were beneficial or pests. The highest score for Altoona Midway was Graham with a score of 61, which helped place B team in 6th place.
The next contest is the Greenhand Conference for freshmen. There they will take a test on the history of FFA then they will break into groups and go to different breakout sessions.
