On October 3 over 550 FFA Greenhands gathered at Cherryvale High School to attend the 2012 Greenhand Conference. Altoona-Midway brought seven greenhands: Carrie Coble, Brittney Kinzle, Jordyn Graham, Danielle Dixon, Dakota Carter, Khila DesJardin, and Dallas Wood.
Once at Cherryvale, these Greenhands participated in an ice breaker, where they were given a paper for other Greenhands to sign. Then the SE District FFA Officers started the opening ceremonies. After opening ceremonies and a short skit based on this year’s rodeo theme, the Greenhands (first year members) took an information test on many aspects of FFA, such as when FFA was organized, who the National and District officers are, and other FFA related questions.
They then broke into groups and headed for their different break-out sessions. One of the sessions was about bio-security. Dr. Coover from SEK genetics talked about how bio-security is helping us now and how it will help us in the future. Other sessions were led by district FFA officers, in these sessions the worked on teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. There were also sessions about artificial insemination, Kansas State University, John Deere, Farm Bureau, and many others.
Then the Greenhands were treated to Chicken Annie’s for lunch. After lunch they filed back into the gymnasium to wait for results and closing ceremonies. Each member that has the highest score from their school participated in a information spell-down. They were asked questions taken from the written test that they took earlier that morning. Altoona placed 14th overall, with Jordyn Graham having the highest score from Altoona. Jordyn tried her hardest but did not make it into the top ten. Carrie Coble participated in creed speaking. Her scores placed her 11th overall from a possible 48 participants. Congratulations Carrie!!!
After the spell-down, a speaker from Oregon spoke about how being awkward as a youth can lead to some pretty awesome experiences later in life through perseverance and hard work. Then the district FFA officers began closing ceremonies.
The Greenhands learned a lot from this experience, especially how being in FFA is an awesome experience. They met new people, learned exciting things, and grew together as the Altoona-Midway FFA Greenhands. Giddy Up greenhands!!!
