FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
Dental screenings and requested treatments have been completed on all students. Hearing and vision have been completed for grades K-5. Grades 6-12 will be completed by the end of November. Scoliosis checks have been done on 5th grade girls. In November, 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys will be done.
Parents will receive results of all screenings in the elementary students’ grade cards. Results for grades 6-12 will be sent out when screenings are completed. If you have any questions you can contact me at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays or at the Wilson County Health Department, 620-378-4455.
If your student receives a referral, it is important to follow up on it so your student can do their best at school. If your student receives a hearing referral, you can either see your doctor or the audiologist from Greenbush will come to the school at no charge. If you want the audiologist to see your student, sign the permission slip and return it to the school. If your student receives a vision referral, please make an appointment with an optometrist for further testing. Take the referral form with you and have them fill it out and return it to the school.
November 15, 2012, is the 37th “Great American Smoke Out”. Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer in the United States. Tobacco use is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths in the United States. A survey in 2009 showed that 20% of students in high school smoke and a recent survey shows that 5% of middle schoolers smoke. Smoke from cigarettes (second hand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke) can cause harmful health effects on those exposed to it. Adults and children can have health problems from breathing tobacco smoke. Because cigarette smoke and tobacco use are activities people choose to do—smoking is the most preventable cause of death in our society.
