K-12 COUNSELOR’S CORNER
“Courage” is the character trait being emphasized in October. One aspect of courage is to build confidence. How can parents help with this? Encourage independence (in small increments) and extend a compliment when your child tries something new.
Learning to overcome fear is another component of courage. As kids’ cognitive abilities develop, they may start to be afraid of the dark, monsters, etc. How to help? Teach children to use words for their fears instead of being paralyzed by them. Harness their imaginations and help chase the monsters out from under the bed at night, etc.
Learning to face the unknown is the third aspect of courage. We all encounter the unexpected from time to time. Help your children by walking them through an upcoming event, familiarizing them with possible challenges and teaching ways to handle those challenges.
Hopefully, children learn to do the right thing, component number four, when confronted with choices. As children develop a sense of right/wrong, they are building the foundation for moral courage. How can parents help? Praise your children when they play with an unpopular child or when they stand up for someone who is being shunned or bullied.
Finally, number five is to set a good example. Do you respond calmly or do you panic when encountering various situations? Also, remember that when parents take a stand, even though it is unpopular, they are providing an example for kids to remember.
