The Altoona- Midway High School National Honor Society hosted an assembly on November 12th, 2012 in honor of Veteran’s Day. The assembly started with the color guard, boy scouts Michael Carroll and Austin Sade assisted with this aspect of the program.
The people attending then said, “The Pledge of Allegiance”, led by the Chapter President Nichole LaCrone. Robert VanFossen then proceeded to play Taps with a trumpet performance. Tyler Stoldt shared about the history of Taps and introduced the veterans. The veterans spoke about what rank they attained, what years they were in, and what branch of the military they served in. “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood was played, along with a slide show honoring our veterans.
We had a presentation about Captain Milburn Apt, the reason the Altoona-Midway Middle and High Schools have the “Jet” as the mascot. For more information about Milburn, please see the link in the right column.
The veterans in attendance were: Melvin Eubanks from Chanute, Alan Weiser from Chanute, and Jene Beck from Chanute. Alan Weiser is the Agricultural Education Teacher at Altoona-Midway. After the program came to an end, the National Honor Society hosted a small reception for the veterans in the cafeteria. The members of the National Honor Society at Altoona-Midway High School include: President Nichole LaCrone, Vice-President Nikkita Almond, Secretary Ashley Caylor, Historian Skylar Morgan, StuCo Rep. Kayla Drybread, Lane Huffman, and Tyler Stoldt.
The main goal of the Veterans Day program was to honor the veterans in our community for all of the sacrifices they have made for our country. We have to remember freedom isn’t free. There are men and woman who risk their lives for our freedom everyday. And for that, we thank them.
